The men’s 1sts and 2nds put last week’s disappointing results behind them and joined the 3rds and 4ths in the winner’s circle to bring up a Demon Day in the round 2 one-day clash against Camberwell Magpies. The women’s 1sts split their T20’s against Box Hill while the 2nds lost both games. Our women’s Shield team opened up their account in style with a winning T20 double over Kingston Heath. The MCC Club XI No.1 side went down to Old Scotch No.2 in their season opener.
Bowling first against the Magpies, the 1st XI’s Jackson Coleman (3/27) made early inroads into their line up with two wickets in his opening spell. A Blake Thomson run out sparked the loss of three quick wickets, the first of Jackson Koop’s two and one from Cameron White to have Camberwell 5 for 69. Fergus O’Neill chimed in for his maiden 1st XI wicket and although there was some resistance at 8/107, we bowled the Pies out for 140.
A shaky start saw us 3 for 42 however Meyrick Buchanan (60 n.o.) and Charles Lill (63 n.o.) put on an impressive unbeaten 4th wicket partnership of 101 to secure the win and a bonus point.
The 2nds win was set up by a 95-run opening stand between Peter Petricola (53) and Will Thompson, who went on to make 80 (115 balls), his first half-century for Melbourne and therefore easily his highest score. Sean Griffin’s busy 42 and Andre De Lange’s 30 helped us to 8/257 at the close.
Wilson McGillivray (2/28) and Glenn Hannah (2/36) took early wickets and although the Magpies recovered, a solid all-round bowling effort bowled Camberwell out for 217.
The 3rds would have been a little disappointed in being bowled out in 40 overs for 178,with Sam Brewin (51) making a half century and Alex Cesarios contributing 39. However they bounced back with the ball knocking over the Pies for 139. At 2/81 we looked up against it however Josh Ash grabbed a vital breakthrough then went on to reap the impressive figures of 3 wickets for just 12 runs off his nine overs. Aaron Boyle (3/34) also helped close the game out.
The 4ths chased 6/174 after Will O’Brien (3/23) and Michael Cesarios (2/46) did best with the ball. Max Tucker’s 47 and Max Welsh (44) set us well on the way to our target which was achieved six down in the 39th over.
The women’s 1sts made 2/129 in their 1st math of the day against Box Hill with Amy Vine finishing unbeaten on 52, Courtney Webb making 28 and Renee Moffitt firing 36 off 23 balls (three 4s and a six). Unfortunately this wasn’t enough, being passed five down in the 19th over despite Elly Donald’s 3 for 17 off her four overs.
Batting first again in game two, we upped the ante with Vine (65 off 57 balls) making her second 50 of the day with Webb (22) and Moffitt (31) again contributing to the final score of 7/150. In the field, Ella Hayward (3/17) led the attack that restricted Box Hill to 7/121.
The 2nds had difficulty chasing Box Hill in both games. Brea Sutton (3/28) did best in the first match however we fell 25 short in chasing 5/118. In game 2 we were set a more challenging 4/147 where Hasrat Gill was tidy (1/17 off 4) however we managed just 8/94 in reply.
The Shield team had a stand out all-round performance in each of their games from MCC newcomers. In the first match Lucy Page 3/12 off 4 overs and 32 n.o. was the star in their five wicket win, assisted by Chelsea Wemyss’ 24. In game 2 it was Amelia O’Meara’s turn, making 37 in our 5/102 before putting in a match winning spell of 3/19 off 4 overs with the ball.
The Club XI took on a couple of Premier 1sts players in the Old Scotch 2nds line up, with Tom Bischoff collecting 4/33. Facing a chase of 8/193, only Liam Durkin (47 n.o.) got going where we finished on 5/139.
