On a weekend where there was limited Demon success across the board, our men’s 1sts and 2nds both had spirited wins over Monash Tigers in their Saturday/Sunday two-day match. Unfortunately they were the only wins with the 3rds and 4ths having their early season winning run halted. Both women’s Premier teams went down to Prahran; the Shield team had a bye, while the Club XI teams also came out on the losing side.
The 1st XI battle against the Tigers ebbed and flowed all weekend. Monash was five for 81 at lunch on the first day after Aaron Boyle (2/39) made early inroads. However the Tigers dominated the next session, putting on 110 for the sixth wicket before Brad Melville broke through, followed by two run outs had the scoreboard reading 8/261 at tea. Eventually a third run out (off the bowler’s hand) had Monash all out for 295, to which we responded by being 1/70 at stumps.
On Sunday morning, Blake Thomson (54) and Sam Harper (50) continued to build a 106-run partnership until Sam departed at 2/111 and Blake not long after. At 6/152, the chase looked decidedly shaky. However Brad Melville (68) and Sean Sturrock (62) had other ideas, Sean carrying on from where he left off last week when he scored his maiden 50, bettering that mark. Brad dug in for almost three hours to make his second 1st XI half century. Sean departed after a 105-run partnership with 39 runs still required for victory however Brad found a willing ally in a cool Kieran Elliott (18 n.o.). Although Brad was dismissed in sight of victory, Kieran calmly ensured the efforts of those before him were not in vain.
The 2nds batted first and were 5/63 not long after lunch with the top order all back in the pavilion. Will Thompson (39), Zac Mevissen (42) and Pat Smith (22) showed some lower order grit to take the total past the 200 mark. The bowling unit then put in a real strong display, with important wickets taken by various bowlers before scoreboard started getting away from them. Glenn Hannah (4 for 42 off 14 overs) did it at both ends of the innings, taking two early ones before knocking over the last two in consecutive balls. Zac Mevissen and Usama Saddiq were the other multiple wicket takers in the 29-run win.
The 3rds and 4ths both chased unsuccessfully. The 3rds would have been disappointed in being bundled out for 105 chasing 226 in excellent conditions where Fergus O’Neill top scored with 33 to add to his 2/31. The 4ths fell 42 short in their chase of 7/195 with Rory Freeman scoring 76 of their 153.
Our women’s 1sts found Prahran’s 8/218 well beyond them, being bowled out for 111. Brea Sutton (3/15 off 6) had done well with the ball but only Amy Vine (24) got past 20. The 2nds had a far more competitive game where Bridie Chesterfield (34) and Jessica Sherman (36) lead the scorers in a team total of 178. Although we found wickets had to come by, the run rate was kept in reasonable check but we were passed with two overs remaining.
The MCC Club XI Div 2 side made just 97 but fought hard with ball in hand only to be passed seven down. The Division 3 team found Melbourne Uni too strong, ending their chase well in arrears but batted out the overs.
Next week the men play a two-day Saturday/Saturday round against Footscray (1sts away) while the women take on Box Hill on Sunday (1sts at the Albert).
The women’s Shield side are back in action playing their final T20 round at Frankston but are unfortunately out of finals calculation. MCC Club Xi Div 2 play Old Haileybury away whilst the Div 3 side host Sandringham at Beaumaris.
Also next Sunday the new Vic Super Slam men’s T20 competition starts – more of this to come later in the week!
