It would be no surprise for you to learn that Melbourne’s storms in the latter part of the week and on the weekend itself limited the amount of Demon action. Some venues were more affected than others. The men’s 1st XI played just 57 overs after a soaked Albert Ground outfield delayed the start and a mid-afternoon storm intervened. Remarkably the 2nds, 3rds and 4ths were able to get in a full day’s play. All women’s Premier matches were cancelled whilst the women’s ‘Shield’ game lasted just three balls.
The 4th XI was the only Demon side to register winning points. Dandenong resumed at 2/29 chasing our 279 and were bowled out for 208. Tom Cesaro (4/40 off 23 overs) was the main destroyer, adding three wickets to last week’s early scalp at an important time as the Panthers reached 5/167, looking half a chance to chase us down. Michael Cesarios (3/39) and Cam Sturrock (2/12) also took handy wickets.
The 1st XI threatened to roll through Dandenong in the shortened day, having them 6 for 74 however an unbeaten 7th wicket partnership thwarted our challenge. Aaron Boyle (pictured above) bowled beautifully in claiming 4 for 26 off 14 overs.
The 2nds denied Dandenong the points, largely thanks to an unbeaten 9th wicket partnership of 59 between youngsters Will Thompson (32 n.o.) and Fergus O’Neill (32 n.o.). Chasing 9/340 and being 8 for 166 minutes after tea, winning as not a realistic option. The pair denied the Panthers for just under two hours with Will batting for nearly three to not only save the points, but what will be invaluable experience in the middle for them both for the future.
The 3rds were defending 189 in conditions completely unaffected by the rain at Beaumaris. The momentum ebbed and flowed throughout the day; 0/38, then two wickets to Trent Thomson (score 2 for 46), followed by three wickets to Will O’Brien to have Dandenong 6 for 113 and in with a real chance. Unfortunately the next breakthrough was all too late and we were passed seven down.
In Club XI, MCC 1 was washed out whilst the no.2 team suffered a heavy defeat.
A round of Vic Super Slam was played yesterday morning at the Albert with Uni being the victors. Zac Mevissen (3/28), Aaron Boyle (2/21) and Brad Melville (2/25) acquitted themselves with the ball and unfortunately a six-run slow over rate penalty boosted Uni’s tally to 7/164. Will Pucovski (64) showed good touch but we fell 13 short in the chase. A Vic Super Slam ‘make up round’ will be played at the Albert this Wednesday night against the Bulldogs, with our final round played in January.
There is no women’s or Club XI cricket until after the Christmas/New Year break however there is a men’s Premier one-day round next Saturday against St Kilda (1st XI at home).
