GIRLS TAKE DOWN BOMBERS
Date of Event : Wed Jan 30, 2019 9:04AM

Our women’s Premier 1sts welcomed back the one-day format part of their season by having a comprehensive win over Essendon-Maribyrnong Park, a club that has given us trouble more often than not. Bowling first the Demons skittled the Bombers for just 72 in 21.2 overs. Tegan Orwin, Elly Donald and Steph Townsend each took two wickets before Amy Yates finished things off rather abruptly taking 3 for 0! Amy then made sure there was no nervous chase as she made 33, the Demons winning by nine wickets in the 24th over.

The only other women’s match was our 2nds T20 final last Friday evening where we went down by 7 runs to Box Hill. We did reasonably well holding the Mustangs to 7/116 however got off to a shaky start with the bat. At 5/48 with seven overs remaining the cause looked lost however a late rally by Annecy Homberg (37 n.o.) and Olivia Downes (18) showed real spirit and left us not far away at the end.

The men’s Premier teams took on the male variety Bombers. The 1st XI was brilliantly served by an outstanding opening partnership of 197 between Charles Lill (89) and Blake Thomson. It was just the second time Charles has had the opportunity to bat in the 1st XI, having forced his way up the grades with centuries in the 2nd and 3rd XIs earlier in the season.

Blake went onto make a superb 148 off 229 balls (16 fours), his second highest score following on from his 166 n.o. last season, and third 1st XI century. Matthew Brown (45) and Meyrick Buchanan (39 n.o.) helped the tally along to 5/347 at the close of play.

The 2nds were on the end of a lot of leather chasing, Essendon declaring late in the day at 7/398. The stand out bowler in the face of the heavy scoring was Fergus O’Neill, taking 5 for 43 from his 11 overs. Unfortunately we’ll resume having already lost a wicket.

The 3rds look set for a big score when openers Alex Cesarios (77) and Joel Ludik (39) set a solid foundation. They only managed to get to 222 and that was largely thanks to Phil Halbish’s unbeaten 43.

The 4ths had a day of momentum shifts, before eventually bowling the Bombers out for 160. They created plenty of chances but not all were taken. Hugh Hyslop (3/25) lead the wicket takers and Scott Gordon (2/14) resumed at the bowling crease after illness kept him away for the first half of the season. Shane Giese finished the innings with 2 for 0 then established himself at the crease, where he is 54 n.o. and hoping to guide his team home from their overnight score of 3 for 84.
