The men’s 2nds, 3rds and 4ths, as well as the women’s 2nd XI, all had comfortable wins while our 1st XIs each suffered losses. The women’s Shield team was washed out when the game was in the balance, as was the Club XI Division 2 match while the Division 3 team went under.
Both 2nds team wins were set up by the bowlers. The men, playing Essendon, had the Bombers 8 for 57 before a minor recovery gave them a target of just 108. Kieran Elliott ((4/24) did most of the damage while pat Smith and Wilson McGillivray each took two wickets. Will Thompson (61 n.o.) led the successful chase, achieved two down well within the bonus point period (40 overs).
The women’s 2nds were even more ruthless, knocking over for Prahran for 53 where wickets were spread across six bowlers with Katie Haszeldine and Ella Stallwood being the multiple wicket-takers. At 4 for 6 we had a jittery start ourselves before Vanchica Pathania’s unbeaten 28 saw us safely home.
Prahran 1sts batting card had a significantly different look to it than their 2nds, amassing 5 for 333. Elly Donald (2/52) did best with the ball and Charli Killeen (40) top scored with the bat but our chase fell well short.
The men’s 1sts batting lacked early momentum and although a couple of partnerships threatened to get us back into gear we fell to 8/129. Fortunately Jackson Koop (75 n.o.) hung in there to give the bowlers something to bowl at and with Sean Sturrock, an unbeaten ninth wicket partnership of 84 set Essendon 214 to win. Unfortunately the Bomber bats largely controlled things from there, winning by six wickets.
Third XI skipper Will Ryan led his side to a reasonably comfortable win, he himself taking 2/29 and making 66 at the top of the order after being set 177 to win. Will O’Brien (2/43), Alex Cesarios (2/29) and Aaron Boyle (1/13 off nine overs) each played their part in a solid team bowling performance. Alex also opened up with 38 to help put the game beyond reasonable doubt, the win achieved with five wickets in hand.
The 4th XI played it very tight, keeping the Bombers to 6/135 off 45 overs with Stewart McCooke (2/17 off 8) the lone multiple wicket-taker. Chris Anderson (56 n.o.) found form after his fitness battles, being well supported by Pat Frawley (38) and Max Tucker (35 n.o.) in their eight wicket win.
The women’s Shield team had put together 9/102 and had Brighton 2/52 when the rain came. The Club XI Div 2 team would have been confident chasing Old Caulfield’s 126 after Tom Cameron took 4/27, being 1/37 when washed out. The Div 3 side was unable to chase down Old Caulfield’s 2/232, falling 63 short.
In terms of ladder positions, the men’s 1sts hang onto third place however only five points separates third and eighth. The 2nds, although 11th and back in touch with the final eight being six points out with four two-day matches remaining. The 3rd XI have snuck up to seventh with only six points (a two-day first innings win) separating seventh and 13th, while the 4ths maintain third place.
The women’s 1sts find themselves just out of the final four while the 2nds are second. The Shield team in 7th but there are plenty of rounds left for the teams out of the four to make a finals charge.
The Club XI Div 2and 3 teams are third and sixth respectively.
