GRAEME LAY TO LEAD MCC WOMEN’S CRICKETERS
Date of Event : Wed Jul 19, 2017 5:05PM

We are delighted to announce Graeme Lay as our women’s cricket coach for the 2017/18 season. Having held the assistant coach role since the inception of MCC women’s teams five seasons ago, Graeme is stepping up to the head coaching position after Bryan Harper stepped down from the main role at the end of last season. He will lead a coaching panel team that includes former players Andrew Kent and Justin Graham.

Graeme has been an MCC person through and through since he joined the Demons as a player in 1981/82. As a regular fixture behind the stumps, Graeme went onto play 229 games for Melbourne in a 16-year career, collecting four 3rd and 4th XI premiership medallions along the way.

Graeme joined the MCC Premier Cricket Committee in 2010 and showed immense interest in our women’s cricket program through the development phase, hence his involvement on the coaching panel since. As the assistant coach, and primarily looking after our Seconds team on match day, he has overseen much of the talent that has come through the playing ranks. Over the past two seasons there has been team success in the form of ‘back to back’ Seconds Twenty20 titles plus the one-day premiership in 2016/17.

We are thrilled that former MCC club captain and coach, Andrew Kent, will support Graeme in a coaching role. Andrew will, in particular, assist in the development of the girls batting skills, in addition to imparting his broad knowledge gained across all areas of cricket in his 325-game Premier cricket career that he retired from at the end of last season.

We are pleased that Justin Graham will also be an assistant coach, where his main focus will be looking after our Seconds team on match day in addition to helping the girls develop their all-round skills at training. Having played just under 300 games for Melbourne across all grades that include multiple premierships, and in combination with his recent coaching experience at sub-district club Kew, makes Justin well equipped to further serve the club he has great affection for.

In announcing Graeme, Andrew and Justin’s appointments, MCC Premier Cricket Committee chairman Michael Sholly said ‘We are excited to have Graeme, Andrew and Justin head up our women’s coaching unit, all having outstanding coaching credentials, each with their own strengths that we believe will complement each other. They have a great connection to the MCC and we wish them and the girls every success in the 2017/18 season’.
