ROOS COP ‘DE LONG’ HANDLE
Date of Event : Tue Dec 12, 2017 9:13AM

Andre De Lange led the charge with the bat in our 2nd XI victory as the men’s 1sts, 2nds and 3rds all chalked up convincing wins over Greenvale Kangaroos on Saturday. The other team in the winner’s circle were our women’s 1sts, who got up on the third last ball of the innings in a very tight T20 encounter over EMP.

Batting first at Greenvale Reserve on a very flat wicket, Andre partnered with Joel Ludik (79), who himself made his highest score for the Demons, putting on 171 for the opening stand. Sam Brewin (46 n.o.) took over and added another 104 with Andre. Batting through the innings, Andre finished unbeaten on 142 scored off just 134 balls (11 fours and two sixes), the team score closing on an impressive 1/275.

The Roos were making a game of the chase before fading in the latter part; Andre’s 10 overs 1/39 not helping their cause with Will O’Brien (2/35 off 9) and Alex Cesarios (1/36 off 9) keeping things in check.

The 1sts were off to a shaky start being 3/29 before Matthew Brown (46), Meyrick Buchanan (45) and Jack Paynter (43) dug in with valuable contributions. The bowling then came to the fore. Glenn Hannah (3/17) and Sean Sturrock (3/34) took wickets at both ends of Greenvale’s innings, while the unsuspecting Blake Thomson (3/34) tied up in the middle order and took wickets, to roll the Roos for 129 and grab a bonus point to boot.

The 3rds weighed in with a good batting performance, putting 3/192 on the board in their 45 overs, led by Fergus O’Neill (68) who took a liking to the opening role and combined with Michael Cowdrey (53) to put on 96 for the 2nd wicket. Campbell Kellaway, on debut in the 3rds, finished the innings off nicely to end up 47 not out. The bowlers then did the job on the Roos, bowling them out for 124 thanks largely to the ‘returning’ Phil Halbish (2/14) and Steven Van Riet (3/17).

The 4ths struggled with the bat and only an unbeaten 57-run 9th wicket partnership added a level of competitiveness with Shane Giese top scoring (41 n.o.). Their eventual 8/147 was passed just three down with Pat Frawley taking 2/24 on resumption from a study break.

The 3rd round of women’s T20 matches against EMP was played away in ‘challenging’ conditions; the scores in both the 1sts and 2nds double header reflecting that. The 1sts bowled first and no one bowler went for more than 15 with Jordan Watson (3/12 off 3) being the multiple wicket taker and Anna O’Donnell claiming two run outs to add to her 1/13 (4). The chase looked a little shaky at 3 for 19 however Amy Vine (pictured) played a pivotal role in guiding the Demons home with an unbeaten 38. The win keeps the 1sts in the all-important top two spots on the T20 ladder.

The 2nds suffered just their second loss of the season. We were held to 6/87 with Bridie Chesterfield (34) top scoring, EMP passed one down in the 17th over.

Our 3rds were forced to forfeit.

The Club XI teams were also unsuccessful, the Div 2 team falling 60 short and, the Div 3 side failed to negotiate a deteriorating HG Smith track, going down by 99.

In the final rounds before Christmas, men’s Premier might finally get to play a two-day match against Casey-South Melbourne (1sts away). Note that the 2nds will play on Saturday and Sunday December 16 & 17 due to a commitment at the Albert Ground to host an Australian v Pakistan U.19 Youth International three match series. The other XIs play on December 16 & 23.

The Premier women conclude with a T20 double header at Plenty Valley on Sunday while the Shield play a T20 Saturday away to Brighton District.

The Club XIs play Old Scotch (Div 2 at HG Smith) and Old Carey (Div 3 away).
