Unfortunately our more senior teams – the men’s 1sts and 2nds and women’s 1sts – all lost on the weekend while the men’s 3rds and 4ths plus the women’s 2nds all had strong wins to strengthen their positions heading towards finals. The women’s 3rds had a bye whilst, disappointingly, the Club XI double header at Beaumaris SC was cancelled due to the competition’s heat rule (predicted temperatures above 38 degrees).

As it was our women’s 2nds match yesterday was reduced to 30 overs due to heat considerations. Nevertheless we were able to bowl Plenty Valley out for 85 in the 27th over. Parry Jenkins and Clem Ryan-Fuller each took three wickets with Mia Perrin chipping in with 2 for 1. Charli Killeen (57 n.o.) made short work of the chase, achieved in 19 overs and a bonus point to boot.

The men’s 3rds were defending 222 and had Will O’Brien taking two early wickets, before adding two more in later spells to finish with 4 for 21. Usama Saddiq claimed two and a couple of handy run outs helped the 3rds to a 94-run win.

The 4ths resumed at 3/82 and Shane Giese took his overnight score from 54 to 87, guiding his team to relative safety where the Demons managed to pass the Bombers six down. With just a 41-run lead the boys had a crack at an outright and were some chance at 4 for 24. Hugh Hyslop (4/29) threatened to run through Essendon again late however time was against.

Our men’s 1sts were unable to defend their 5/347 declared, Essendon completely dominating with the bat passing us three down in the 74th over. The 2nds fared little better in their chase of the Bombers 7/398, being bowled out for 218. Five scores over 25 weren’t enough, where our no.10 Wilson McGillivray (34) top scored.

The women’s 1sts travelled to Yarrambat and kept the ‘Bats’ to 5/158 off their 50 overs. Hayleigh Brennan (1/17 off 10 overs) was exceptionally tidy and Amy Yates (3/34) headed the wicket takers. Skipper Teagan Parker (53) led the chase however it faltered after her dismissal and we were bowled out 21 short.

In upcoming matches, the Premier women both play Dandenong (1sts away, 2nds at BSC) while the 3rds resume after having two weeks off to play Mt Martha away.

In men’s Premier, the 1sts and 2nds play a two-day game on Saturday and Sunday against Carlton (1sts away) while the 3rds and 4ths play a one-dayer on Saturday.

MCC Club XI Div 2 play away to Old Xaverians and the Division 2 team hosts Old Whitefriars at BSC.

Following the Melbourne v Camberwell-Magpies Premier men’s round we have agreed to play a match to raise awareness and money for MND. One of the Camberwell players’ family members is suffering from the disease. So in line with the Collingwood v Melbourne AFL match they have asked us to field a team against them. It is a family day with activities and games for kids with a T20 match going on in the background.

We are being captained by Andrew Kent with some of his cohorts already agreeing to play. If anyone wants to make themselves available for the day could they let Michael Sholly know.

Probably best suited to those who have played against Camberwell for a number of years and know the opposition. Let me know if you are available.

 Cheers Michael Sholly
