GIRLS WEATHER THE BLUES
Date of Event Melbourne Cricket Club : Wed Oct 30, 2019 11:40AM
Anna O'Donnell grabs 4/14 in Rd 7 T20

It was another weekend where there was a lot of cricket scheduled, with the weather having an impact on the progress of some matches and washing out others. However there was enough time for our two women’s Premier teams to each chalk up T20 victories over Carlton-Brunswick ‘Blues’. The wins place the 1sts and 2nds equal top and third respectively, with six T20 rounds to go before semi-finals.

In the opening 1sts game, it was the bowlers who starred. In defending just 8/96, Anna O’Donnell (pictured) (4/14 off 3.2 overs) grabbed two in her opening spell then two to seal victory. Steph Townsend (2/14) also took important wickets. The bats took over in game two, led by Elly Donald (70 off 56 balls) and Amy Vine (45 off 45) to set up a match winning score. Ella Hayward (2/8) and Olivia Downes (3/13) put pay to the Blues chances.

Unfortunately the details of the 2nds wins are a bit sketchy at the time of writing although we can report that Jordan Watson (57) and Bridie Chesterfield (47) set up the first game with the bat.

Our women’s Shield team had a promising 3/117 on the board before their game was washed out with skipper Jen Donnelly (37) and English arrival Jess Couser (31 n.o.) making solid contributions.

In Club XI our no.1 side was set off for a chase before the rain came however our No.2 team beat the weather and the opposition, opening their season’s account with an 8-wicket T20 win, thanks to John Jackson’s unbeaten 67.

In men’s Premier it was the first day of the opening two-day match against Northcote. The rain created ‘stop/start’ affairs but under new rules this season there can be up to an hour (30 mins in 3rds and 4ths) lost play made up so little actual playing time was lost.

The 1sts bowlers were on top most of the day with Jackson Coleman (4/43) doing most of the damage in dismissing Northcote for 182. We were a shaky 3/41 in response and have steadied slightly at 3/65 with Blake Thomson (39 n.o.) holding firm.

The 2nds fired out the Dragons for 120 after 2nd XI debutante Marcus Jackman (4/15) ran through the top order. Peter Petricola (78) wasted no time setting after the win, being fourth out when tied with the target. While first innings points were duly achieved, seven wickets then fell for 11 runs, setting up an interesting second day.

The 3rds toiled hard, where Northcote finished the day on 7/241 and showed every indication they intend to bat on next week and use as many of the 10 overs available to them as they can, although stand-in skipper Pat Smith (3/47) may have something to say about that.

The 4ths got off to a poor start – 2 for 0 in the first over then 3 for 2 – with skipper Josh Benson (70 n.o.) adding a semblance of order however, with Northcote 2 for 78, our 140 may not be enough.

The Vic Super Slam T20 tournament started off with triple headers being played at Greenvale Reserve where Melbourne played the day’s second and third game scheduled on Greenvale #4, their 3rd/4th XI oval. Conditions were ‘challenging’ both on and off the field - let’s leave it at that - and we probably lost the opening game in the first half of both innings. Sean Sturrock (27 & 3/21) tried had to get us back in the game being 6 for 47 before making 97, with Carlton then being 0/63 before being passed in the 19th over

We were making a better fist of our second match against the Bulldogs (4 for 133 after 18.3 overs) before the rain came and washed out proceedings.
